Legends of Buccaneer Bay

"Legends of Buccaneer Bay"

History suggests that she’d seen service as one of the very last of the Privateers -- freebooters commissioned by the Continental Navy to harass and prey upon enemy shipping during the bloody sea battles of the Revolutionary War. Of her later years, little is known. Was she sunk by a storm? Or hulled in some forgotten sea battle? Even her name is lost to history.

But one story has it that her drowned hulk was scooped from the sandy sea floor by a mighty storm surge and deposited upon a high dune, during one of the many hurricanes that periodically reshape the Carolinas’ coastlines. Now exposed to the elements, her timbers gradually succumbed to, wind, weather, and the ravages of time.

Years later, following yet another hurricane season, a local beachcomber reported that the great hulk had simply vanished, leaving not a trace.

But had she returned to her eternal rest?

You might hear yet another legend that’s still told in low dives and seamen’s saloons along the Outer Banks and Inland Waterways: On certain nights when the full moon hangs low over the sea, lighting a shimmering path to the horizon... when scudding clouds traverse the sky and a busy onshore wind whispers through the scrub, bowing tall grasses along the dunes... you might just come upon the ragged nameless hulk of a sailing ship, risen once again, out of time, from the silent depths... mysterious lights aglow, shapeless forms lurking on her deck, still flying her bloody-red "Jolly Roger" -- the dreaded warning that once terrorized her prey with the threat, "No quarter given!"

My good friend Cap'tn Mac, authority on all things piratical, makes the following suggestion:

"Aye, Matey. Should ye chance upon this scurvy wreck some moonlit evening as ye stroll the barrier beach, I recommend that ye resist any impulse to more closely explore this 'Legend of Buccaneer Bay!'"
